Study

The portrait-painting has followed through Munkácsy's life. He started with biedermeier portraits in the 1860's, continued with modern, psychological portraits between 1870-80, and accomplished this period with his representative portraits painted in the 1890's. In the 19th century, the portraits were possessed by the "models" themselves, so these paintings went directly to the homes of the depicted people, they were very rarely exhibited, or shown publicly. This fact stands as an explanation for the phenomena, that even well-known oeuvres contain unknown masterpieces, which sometimes appear in the art market, or in connection with an exhibition. In the case of Munkácsy's art it is certainly true, as being a fashionable portrait-painter in Paris, he was charged to paint a lot of portraits.

In the catalogue of the Munkácsy monograph there are only 120 portraits which must be just the fragment of the whole oeuvre. Most of them were painted in the 1870's, so early in the painter's life; they mostly depict relatives, friends. These portraits are not signed, as no one found it important at that time. If the early portraits are signed, this happened later, when the master became famous, and well-known.

The most important period from the point of view of portrait-painting is the one beginning in 1870, after his studies in Vienna, Munich, and Dusseldorf. He painted most of them in Paris or in Colpach. His character-depicting art had become really deep then, he was able to show the soul of his models as well. Even at this time there are some portraits which are not signed, mostly the ones depicting relatives - because of the intimate nature of the genre.

The painting "Portrait of a young lady" has been unknown in the Munkácsy oeuvre so far. It is one of the valuable series painted in the 1870's. The woman is wearing the fashionable hair-cut of Paris in the 1870s. It is mysterious and exciting as her delicate figure is appearing from the dark background. The gentle grey of her dress and the colour of the background are typical of Munkácsy's portraits of the period. The whole composition reminds us of Rembrandt.

Although the model's identity is not known, she was most probably Munkácsy's niece, Mariska Munkácsy. Munkácsy painted her when she was a child, and the similarity between the little girl and the young lady makes it most possible, that daughter of the painter's brother, Emil was the model of the painting. Emil Munkácsy, and her daughter, Mary spent a long time at the Munkácsy residence in Paris, in 1878. Although it is not documented, we can almost certainly state, that the model of the portrait was Mariska Munkácsy, and it was painted during her stay in Paris, in 1878.
