Réti, István Nagybánya, 1872 - 1945, Budapest
He studied at the Pattern Drawing School in 1890 and at Hollósy's private school between 1891 and 1893 before going on to attend the Julian Academy in Paris; the years spent under the tutelage of Hollósy remained definitive to him. Their friendship went beyond the conventional student-teacher relationship, for Réti hade already come up with a masterpiece in 1893. He therefore played an active role in moving the painter's colony in Munich to Nagybánya in 1896 and in organising the necessary living conditions. Upon the departure of Hollósy in 1902, he became the leader of the independent school that had just been established. He was the organiser and curator of the jubilee exhibition in 1912. He taught at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts from 1903, working on the ducational reforms of 1920 with Károly Lyka, then was appointed rector in 1927. As critic, theorist and chronicler of the artist colony he wrote constantly for various publications. A posthumous book of his laid the foundations for a historical evaluation of the artist colony, in spite of its subjective moments.
