Mattis Teutsch, János Brassó, 1884 - 1960, Brassó
In 1901-1902 he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest, followed by studies at the Bavarian Academy of Art until 1905. In 1906-1908 he lived in Paris. In 1917 he joined the circle of MA and in 1918 debuted in the gallery of Der Sturm. Though he lived in Brasov starting in 1919, he took part in Avatn-garde exhibitions, putting on one-man shows in Rome, Berlin and Chicago in the mid-twenties. His art is closest to Abstract Expressionism. At first the inspiration of nature is clearlydiscernible in his pictures, but later the soverign forms generated by an inner vision overwhelmed the landscape elements. His water-colours, lino cuts and oil paintings made between 1919 and 1924 consituting a cícle under the title Spiritual Flowers, feature organic formations, now and then mollified by geometric forms.
His sculptural output is also of importance.
