Johann Kupetzky Bazin, 1667 - 1740, Nürnberg
Kupeczky or Kupecký
Born in Bazin in 1667, his father wanted to educate him as a weaver, but he was attracted to painting, so at the age of 15 he escaped in 1682. During his wanderings he reached the castle of Holics in Nitra County, whose lord, Count Czobor, was an art lover and employed the painter Benedikt Klaus of Lucerne at that time. The Count liked the young painter, and when Klaus moved to Vienna in 1684, he took him to Vienna on behalf of the Count and with his financial support.
He studied under Klaus for three years in Vienna and then in 1687 he went to Italy. After 22 years of staying in Italy, he returned to Vienna at the invitation of Prince Liechtenstein for a permanent stay in Vienna, where he was favored by the emperor, and appointed Kupeczky as his court painter. After studying in Vienna, he settled in Nuremberg in 1723, and became a well-known portrait painter of the wealthy bourgeoisie there. His works are preserved in the most famous museums in Europe.
