Czóbel, Béla 1883 - 1976
He began his studies in Nagybánya with Béla Iványi Grünwald, and then trained himself in Munich in 1902, and at the Julian Academy of Paris after that. The Fauves had a powerful influence on him in Paris, and he exhibited with them at the Salon d'Automne. In 1906 he returned to Nagybánya and became the 'leader' of the young artists, called the neos or neo-impressionists, who were breaking with traditions. He was elected a core member of MIÉNK in 1907. He was introduced with the artists who later became members of "The Eight" through his friend Károly Kernstok. As the First World War broke out he moved to Holland, and attached himself to the Bergen group of painters led by Le Fauconnier. He worked in Berlin from 1915, and in Paris from 1925 onwards, returning numerous times to Hungary during the thirties. He lived in Szentendre during the Second World War and returned to stay in Paris until his death, spending his summers in Szentendre. He is considered one of the most important artists of the École de Paris. A representative selection of his work can be seen in Szentendre, in the museum that bears his name.
