Benczúr, Gyula Nyíregyháza, 1844 - 1920, Benczúrfalva
One of the important Hungarian masters of historifying academism. He prepared for the Academy of Munich in a private school in Kassa [Kosice, Slovakia], where he undertook studies in 1861-1862 and between 1865 and 1869. He shared a studio Páll Szinyei Merse beginning in 1861 for four years. He went to Paris twice between 1869 and 1876, on an assignment Ludwig II of Bavaria. He was appointed a teacher of the Munich Academy in 1876. Upon hi return to Budapest in 1883, he took up leadership of the painter's Master-school. The Academy of Vienna elected him a honorary member in 1888, and he became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1910.
